my Trans-Tasman Scrabble challenge - summary )

I'm leaving on my way to Australia shortly (though it's still 4 hours until the plane takes off). Will be playing Scrabble in Sydney Fri, Sat, Sun. Results, nice words, etc. as soon as I'm able (which might be when I'm back here on Tuesday).

Got two new tyres on the car this morning, for less than I thought it would be.
Haven't achieved much else of any note. Maybe tomorrow.

To do (partial).

Sat: get flat tyre (from Wed) fixed - this will probably mean buying two new tyres (was going to have to at next WoF in a couple of months anyway).
Sun: go watch the Phoenix (6pm kickoff). Maybe go to NaNo meetup before. Maybe go to Borders before.
Mon: go to work (wasn't planning to, but I really should the ways things have gone). Then to Waikanae for Scrabble club.
Tue: get packed up to go away.
Wed: fly to Sydney.
Thu: play tourist.
Fri: play Scrabble.
Sat: play Scrabble.
Sun: play Scrabble.
Mon: fly home.
Tue: get unpacked.
Wed: go to work - was planning to, but will probably take this day instead of the earlier Mon.

Hey Jenn - this is the other pic I took at the same time (click for the fullsize version):

Does that help with the thinking?

iPhone update

every time I go back to the Apps store, there seems to be an order of magnitude of new stuff, and free versions of most of the stuff I'm (immediately) interested in.
I've gotten something to check/look up Scrabble words on (from a choice of three!) (CheckWord).
I've gotten two eBook readers (eReader and Stanza)*.
I've gotten Tap Tap Revenge (which looks like fun, if I could be bothered), and TiltSnake.
And most recently I've gotten the new LiveJournal.app (but haven't tried it out yet).

*neither of which looks quite as nice to read on as the reader that Brothers Karamazov came built into - but a dollar or two per book is too much for a slightly nicer reader, compared with being able to get anything from Project Gutenberg etc**. for free onto a free reader.

**the Online Catalog in Stanza includes Free Books by Feedbooks - which includes some contemporary stuff***, as well as all the out-of-copyright classics.

***such as the bits and pieces that Charles Stross has put out under a Creative Commons licence - Accelerando, Scratch Monkey, and (with Cory Doctorow) Appeals Court.

When my radio came on this morning (towards helping wake me up), it was playing "This is London" (Don McGlashan - 1st track on Warm Hand), which was nice. Then, when it finished, Lloyd Scott says it was a mistake - he had meant to play "Miracle Sun" (second-to-last track on Warm Hand) - which though a great song is possibly better suited to later in the day, so (IMHO) not a bad mistake to make.

My Scrabble club word of the night: ULULATE

Damn, I just lost an aglet.

The poll on Stuff yesterday had the usual disclaimer under the results: "Stuff polls are not scientific and reflect the opinions of only those internet users who have chosen to participate". The poll question yesterday was something about who would win a fight between Lindsay Lohan and Paris Hilton. I think the disclaimer was somewhat superfluous, at least the first part of it.

The weekend's bonus words:
28 in 13 games - okay I guess )

It's surprisingly easy reading a book on the iPhone - though I wish it was something easier to read than The Brothers Karamazov - though it is a reasonably easy read for the most part, just hard to feel that you're making any progress (there are no page numbers, and even the equivalent of many pages read hardly makes a dent on the progress bar).

I'm enjoying "The Big Bang Theory" enough that I'm a little scared to look it up in case it got cancelled after half a season or something. There's at least one more episode though cos it's just started.

Fave word played at Scrabble tonight: (H)AGRIDES

I popped into the optometrists again yesterday morning, and fortunately their competent staff member was there (she'd been away for two weeks). The right lenses still hadn't arrived, but she hunted out some more trial lenses (while I went off to leave a blood sample, so that I could then break my fast for the morning). She'll drop the proper lenses in my letterbox on her way home, once they finally arrive. When I got home and was fishing in my pocket for my door key, I pulled my hand out of my pocket, and there was a sticker on one of my fingers saying "left eye", and I thought "that's not right". Luckily the sticker saying "right eye" was still attached to the other trial lens (though I could probably have figured out which was which from the little numbers).

Todo today

- go and leave some blood at the local medlab* (will be allowed to eat something once this is done) (*not an actual MedLab medlab)
- ?* pay my car rego, so that my uncle can bring my car to Auckland airport to pick me up on Fri. (*not sure if I need to go as far as posting the sticker to him, or a copy, or just make sure it's paid, and have the sticker with me when I go up)
- some usual Sat/weekend tasks.
- possibly some (work) clothes shopping (needed, but might not fit it in).
- sort out some stuff to take to the local dropoff point for the eDay 2008 computer recycling thing next week.
- sort out getting said stuff to said dropoff point (as I'll be in Auckland at the time). Possibly carry on to Otaihanga to get rid of other electronic junk (i.e. stuff that eDay isn't accepting).
- more usual Sat/weekend tasks (the more I get out of the way today, the more time I can spend in Welly tomorrow).

I'm not very happy with OPSM - or with the laboratory that produces contact lenses for them. It was a month ago that I went in to get the trial lenses checked, and they sent off the order at that point. I popped in on the weekend a week and a half after that (i.e. three weeks ago), on the off-chance that they'd come in, and they'd not phoned me. The left lenses had already arrived, but they were still waiting on the right ones (a more complicated prescription - the main reason contacts are so much better for me than glasses is that my eyes don't play well together, being one short and one long (plus different astigmatisms) - neither eye is impossibly bad, they're just too different to each other). I went in again a week ago - the guy looked the order up, said they should have arrived a week earlier, and left a note for the staff to ring the laboratory on Mon (when it was open again) (so, why hadn't they chased them up a week earlier?). I got a message on my mobile on Tue that they'd rung the lab, who had no trace of having had an order for my right lenses (despite having received and fulfilled the order for the left lenses...). So, OPSM cancelled the original order, and placed a new one, and told me that it would only be a few days. I haven't heard any more. I presume that when I go in tomorrow they won't have received them, and will have to wait until Mon to chase the lab up again. I'm guessing that I won't get my new contacts before I fly to Auckland in a week (and more to the point, then have to drive back).

I really need to move to Wellington - I keep seeing things that I would have liked to get to, but it's after the fact (and half the time the worth of trying to get in there for whatever from here would have been marginal anyway). The best thing would probably be to rent this place out (I certainly don't want to try selling this place having only just bought it), and find a room or a very small place to rent in Welly. I'd have to throw out a lot of junk in the meantime though.

We had Scrabble club tonight for the first time in a few weeks. My fave play of the night: I could have played RECEIPT(S) (the S had just been played on a centre triple), but there was also a D one below a corner triple, so (D)ECREPIT scored more, as it put the C on a double letter.

Have managed to knock a decent amount off my to-do list this weekend, and to not remember too many more things that should have been on it. There's still more that I would really rather have done before I sleep tonight, but maybe I'll get some of that done during or after watching the (live from Perth) 'Nix v Perth followed by (slightly delayed from its actual broadcast) Doctor Who. Have had further thoughts of how to possibly work around the problem that I left unresolved at work on Fri, not to mention a bright idea towards something else that needs writing up at work, so those might incentivise me to get up early tomorrow. Or not.
